Arlington Public Schools has been hiring for its campuses and central office in a major way over the past three months, and isn’t done yet. Starting July 1, the district hired a new superintendent, some 50 teachers and dozens more employees in varied roles.

 A chart from earlier this month, which provides a snapshot in time, lists 150 names. See them all below.

Among those are four more assistant principals, so now all elementary campuses have full-time assistant principals, according to Director of Human Resources Robert Spiegel. 

New hires include a director of diversity, equity and inclusion; a director of the METCO program, which facilitates bringing young people of color from Boston to study in Arlington; a director of nursing; and a director of digital learning, Spiegel pointed out via email.

“We are happy that in a very challenging recruiting year for schools, we have been able to attract very talented employees to join the Arlington Public Schools,” he said.

Some pandemic history

After going all-remote at the pandemic’s start in March 2020, then moving in September 2020 to a “hybrid” system, with part-time in-person learning, local campuses returned to traditional education in late spring of this year, and this has continued since classes resumed Sept. 9.

“We are still looking for a couple of school nurses, a licensed practical nurse, a data analyst and some teaching assistants and [other] paraprofessionals,” Spiegel continued. “We will have other positions that open up throughout the course of the year, as we will also be looking for long-term subs to cover for maternity leaves and other leaves of absence.”

A comprehensive report on district staffing may occur at the next School Committee meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14. 

The 14-page spreadsheet contains details current as of a few days ago on new employees, with their names and their titles and their educational backgrounds where relevant. 

Who were hired

A look at it shows the district having hired a school psychologist, five social workers, a board-certified behavioral analyst, nine behavior support personnel, an occupational therapist, two literacy coaches, a math coach and two special-education team chairs, among other hires. 

“A couple of the employees listed are starting later this month,” Spiegel said Monday afternoon. “We have also just hired some other new employees. One is starting this week, and we have others starting at the end of October and beginning of November.”

Spiegel also mentioned via email the hiring of five administrative assistants, two custodians and additional staffers in food service, after-school programming and community education.

He noted that the district generally posts most of its openings on TalentEd/School Spring, a commonly used job board for recruiting candidates for teaching and other positions. Principals and curriculum directors select the candidates to interview, and they conduct the interviews along with interview committees, he said.
