Dismay over amended proposal to review police
Rachel Roth of Chandler Street submitted this letter to the editor about the proposed board to review police.
I am dismayed that the Select Board is going to amend the Town Meeting warrant article to establish a civilian review board to allow a retired police officer to become a member. The key to credibility and success for civilian review boards is independence from law enforcement. The original warrant article reflected this essential truth.
To know that the board went against the recommendation of the town's Diversity, equity and inclusion director as well as the Police Civilian Advisory Board Study Committee's research and recommendation only adds to my dismay.
If one goal of establishing a civilian review board is to repair trust between residents and police, the Select Board's action undermines that aim. The Board should reconsider its position.
