Shredding some notions about leaves
Colleen Kirby finds "re-leaf" in her backyard.
Elaine Crowder, who founded the Arlington-MA Invasives “ArMI” in 2021 as an outgrowth of time spent weeding Arlington parks during Covid, brings us the story of Colleen Kirby and her "Mean Mulching Machine."
Follow this Arlington resident as she patrols her property, removing unwanted plants and encouraging biodiversity.
Read about native oaks and all those fall leaves. She used to remove them from her yard and then buy mulch to keep weeds out of the thin soil covering ledge on her side lot.
Now a shredder allows her to mulch using homegrown leaves while simultaneously enriching the soil.
