Petition aims to save Scotch pine at 821 Mass. Ave.

Marina Popova, a 20-year town resident, is a Precinct 13 Town Meeting member who says she aims to “make our town even more beautiful and welcoming for all.” To reach that goal, she works with such local organizations as Arlington Invasives, Arlington Tree Committee and Mothers Out Front. She has a petition seeking the save the tree in photo at right.

The Redevelopment Board plans on Monday, July 1, to consider a proposal to redevelop 821 Mass. Ave., the Atwood House, next to the CVS near Arlington High School.

While I welcome the addition of much-needed commercial space to Arlington, the plan includes demolishing a remarkable, healthy Scotch pine tree. It has a 22-inch diameter, which calculates to from 80 to 100 years old, depending on which growth factor you use (3.5 or 5).

Who are Arlington's master-planning advisers? Here are clues; tell us more

UPDATED June 19: Just before the Redevelopment Board approved those serving on the new master-plan committee in May, Patricia Worden, a longtime critic of town planning, complained to the Arlington Email List, quoting a letter she had sent to various town officials and calling "the listed prospective appointees are mostly inadequate."

She said the new master-plan list "is very different from the members of the 2015 MAPC who were well known and often had served for many years in Town Meeting and other roles. They were well distributed philosophically, age-wise and geographically in Arlington."

Since then, many of the members have been named. The group met June 13, and you can read a summary of who they are. Providing it is Steve Revilak, a member of the Redevelopment Board, who published notes of public meetings as a service.

Is this group of residents "mostly inadequate"? To me, that conclusion is short-sighted, but go ahead and judge for yourself.
