Christine BongiornoBongiorno

UPDATED Sept. 20: Town officials recently made two new appointments of current town employees. The former director of the department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Christine Bongiorno, was named the new deputy town manager, effective Sept. 11. And a longtime member of Arlington's finance team, Julie Wayman, is expected to step into the role of town treasurer/collector of taxes on Oct. 2. Julie Wwayman         Wayman

These appointments were made by Town Manager Jim Feeney. In news releases recently posted to the town website, Feeney wrote that he was very pleased to have them begin working in their new roles.

The deputy town manager earns a salary of $159,000, and the treasurer earns a salary of $113,767, according to Arlington's Director of Human Resources, Caryn Malloy, reached by YourArlington on Sept. 18.

In her new position, Bongiorno is set to assist Feeney in town operations. “I’ve worked with her over the years, and her innovative leadership and organizational skills, plus her commitment to public service make her the perfect fit for this role as we enter this new phase of leadership in Arlington," Feeney wrote in the town news release.

Bongiorno spent two decades working with the HHS department. In this role, she led a group of professionals dedicated to improving public health throughout Arlington. Among her accomplishments working as department director, Bongiorno is credited with guiding the town through two global pandemics, renovating the Arlington Senior Center and creating a sustainable model for service delivery with the Youth Counseling Center.

“Arlington is a community that values creative problem solving and municipal governance that is driven by meaningful community participation,” Bongiorno is quoted as saying. “I sincerely share these values, and grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve the community in this new role.”

Of Wayman's appointment, Feeney wrote that the choice to bring her on board was because of her previous experiences managing and budgeting finances in town. According to the town website, Wayman began her work with Arlington in 2019 as the management analyst for the town manager's office. She also worked as its budget director and assisted in building five budgets of more than $177 million.

In her new role, Wayman is set to manage the custody, disbursement, investment and borrowing of monies, preparation of fiscal reports, collection of taxes and other revenues, according to the town website.

“Arlington has an exceptional leadership team, and the staff in the treasurer’s office are committed to serving the residents of Arlington. I’m honored to be able to lead this hard-working and dedicated team in those efforts,” Wayman wrote. At the Sept. 11 Select Board meeting, Wayman said, "I've worked for the town for almost 7 years and am really excited for this new opportunity."
