Endorsement, internal poll boost Friedman campaign

cfriedman 90

UPDATED, June 20: As the June 27 election nears, the Cindy Friedman's Senate campaign hopes to get out the vote in communities across the 4th Middlesex district supported by its most recent endorsement from the Coalition for Social Justice and by a positive internal poll.

In praising the ground organization, campaign cochair Brenna Donnelly of Woburn said in a June 20 news release, "Our volunteers have been out in the district almost every single day since our kickoff six weeks ago. They've worked extremely hard and have continually received positive feedback about Cindy from their neighbors in the five communities.

"This race will be won by neighbors talking to neighbors in the field. I encourage residents of the 4th Middlesex to join our fight in the remaining days before Election Day and sign up to volunteer for Cindy."

A recent internal campaign poll shows Friedman leading the race in Lexington, Woburn, Burlington and Billerica. The campaign expects that Arlington will be a dead heat.

Clarissa Rowe, a former Arlington selectman and campaign cochair added, "We've raised over $64,000 from individual donors across the district and have successfully surpassed our voter contact goals. We've run an impressive ground game and feel very confident that Cindy will win on Election Day."

Friedman, an Arlington resident, said, "I'm very proud of the positive campaign we have run and the work we have done to outreach to voters in the 4th Middlesex. We have built an incredible organization, knocked on thousands of doors and have steadily built support. Given our strong operation and hard work along the campaign trail, I'm confident that we will do very well next Tuesday."

In directly addressing the voters of the 4th Middlesex, Friedman added, "This campaign has never been about me. It's always been about you.

"For the last nine years, I have had the honor of serving this district that I care so deeply about alongside my good friend Senator Ken Donnelly. When he was fighting for your interests, I was right there with him.

"I want to continue his legacy and continue working for you as your next state senator."

Unions, Mass Retirees, Mass Women's Political Caucus endorse

Friedman has added endorsements, including support from 32BJ SEIU, the largest union of property service workers in the nation, and the Carpenters Union Local 26 and 111.

"These endorsements are particularly meaningful to me because of my longstanding commitment to defending workers' rights," Friedman said in a news release. "As Ken's chief of staff, I fought alongside him to raise the minimum wage to $15 and hour, and I will continue that fight as state senator."

Friedman also won the endorsement of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts (informally known as Mass Retirees) and the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus (MWPC).

Mass Retirees President Frank Valeri and Legislative Director Shawn Duhamel said, "You've shown yourself to be not only knowledgeable on the issues of utmost importance to public retirees and survivors but also strongly committed to promoting their interests and getting results on their behalf in the State House."

MWPC Executive Director Sarah Welsh said: "As chief of staff for the late State Senator Ken Donnelly for nine years, Cindy brings keen understanding of the important issues that matter to residents in this district. Her diverse public advocacy for women’s rights, veteran issues, education and health care is proof of this commitment. The caucus is confident she is the best candidate to represent the district."

Berwick, others offer endorsements

Former candidate for Massachusetts Governor Don Berwick, Democrat of Newton, has endorsed Cindy Friedman of Arlington for the 4th Middlesex state Senate seat.

In a Facebook post, Berwick wrote: "I am enthusiastically endorsing my friend and colleague .... She is exactly the type of clear-headed progressive that we need in public office at this difficult time.

"Her extensive experience as a teacher, activist, manager and ... chief of staff to the late, great Senator Ken Donnelly equip her for effectiveness as a state Senator from Day One."

Berwick, one of the nation's strongest advocates for high-quality health care, ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2014. He was the president and chief executive officer of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and served as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Former state Senator Dan Wolf, Democrat of Harwich, also expressed support for Friedman this week. Having worked directly with Friedman in the state Senate, Wolf wrote, that she "will lead with the heart, soul and vision that the people of Arlington, Billerica, Burlington, Lexington and Woburn became accustomed to with the leadership of the late Senator Ken Donnelly.

"Ken was one of my dearest friends from my time in the Legislature, and I cannot think of a more qualified and dedicated public servant than Cindy to continue Ken's commitment to his communities and the progressive agenda."

Recently, Friedman gained support from Billerica Selectman Kim Conway, who said Friedman "will do a great job representing Billerica."

Facing the June 27 primary, Friedman has endorsements from a majority of members of both the Arlington and Lexington School Committees, a majority of the Arlington Board of Selectmen and numerous other elected officials from Lexington, Billerica, Burlington, as well as Donnelly's family.

A full list of Friedman’s endorsements appears on her campaign website, www.cindyforsenate.org

The 4th Middlesex district includes Arlington, Billerica, Burlington, Woburn and precincts 1, 2 and 4-7 in Lexington.
