AHA chairman seeks reelection, touts experience

Nicholas MitropoulosMitropoulos

UPDATED, March 24: Nicholas Mitropoulos, current chairman of the Arlington Housing Authority (AHA) board, seeks reelection to keep a seat he has held for 20 years.

The 64-year-old faces opposition from first-time candidate Kelda Fontenot.

In a statement to YourArlington, and in response to questions, he notes points to success since 2001 "in receiving more than $30 million in grants to help modernize our six developments and make our 2,000-plus tenants feel safe and comfortable in their surroundings.

“My commitment to the tenants has never wavered over those 20 years, and I promise you this will not change if reelected.”

If elected, he wrote that his focus would include a path to inclusion, diversity and transparency.

Areas to address

"This pandemic has greatly increased the public’s interest and participation in local government, and I believe we can capitalize on this momentum for the greater good." He cited these areas:

  • Safe and secure housing: To continue to offer safe and secure housing to our tenants and as the pandemic has shown, we need to expand this into offering additional social service programs for the Tenants to help fill the voids of loneliness as caused by these pandemic lockdowns.
  • Increase levels of communication: To work to improve the ability of our tenants to communicate with the management and staff of the AHA. "The AHA should be the voice of the tenants, the voice of the town and the voice of the citizens to understand the housing requirements for all," he wrote.
  • Tenant associations: To continue to work with our four established tenant associations and to encourage volunteers to step forward and build an association at the Menotomy Manor.
  • *Inspiration to succeed: To help provide avenues for our younger generation living within our facilities to want to learn and be successful in school and their careers. To do this, we need to continue to offer programs in our newly built Life and Skills Facility that provide after-school programs. "We need to expand this to include career education and sponsored employment opportunities with various industries and local companies," he wrote.

Town native

The Arlington native and lifelong resident who raised his family here, and is "now a proud grandfather here," received his MBA from Babson College.

He said that he built a career in finance as a vice president for commercial operations with many large worldwide companies. He said they included Quanterix, where he is now; Accelrys, Carestream and PerkinElmer. These are life-sciences companies, working in research on Alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, cancer and infectious disease.

He has been active in many local organizations, which he says will continue. They include the Fidelity House Board and the Arlington Touchdown Club. In the past, his involvement includes the Arlington Boys and Girls Club, Arlington Soccer Club, Arlington Youth Basketball and the St. Agnes School Board.
