Heights' sweet spot changes its name (and nothing else)

After 26 years at Lakota Bakery, owner Barbara Weniger has changed the name to Cookie Time Bakery.

Google the old name, and you get the new one.

YourArlington asked Weniger why. Her response Monday, Aug. 7:

"The decision to change the name ... is something I have been thinking about for a while.

"When I started in 1991, I picked the name Lakota, because it reflected that I was from South Dakota and my husband at the time was part Micmac, and the word Lakota translates as 'allies.'

"But it has been 42 years since I lived in South Dakota, and the name really has no connection to the cookies nor to my longtime staff."

In marketing, it's called branding, and it makes a lot of sense.

"So, I wanted something that directly tells people what the bakery is all, about and Cookie Time Bakery describes it perfectly!

"It will be very easy for our customers to connect this name with the bakery, because our distinctive cookies really are our trademark.

"Also, having the word cookie in the name is helpful on the internet with search engines.

"But everything else will stay exactly the same -- the cookies, the location, the owner, the staff will be like always. The customer feedback on the name Cookie Time Bakery has already been totally positive, and I'm really glad I did it."
