16th annual Spy Pond Trails Day held

Map of Spy Pond

Come to Spy Pond Trails Day on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for the 16th annual gathering, returning after a two-year pandemic hiatus.

Those involved will be maintaining access trails to the pond, pruning vistas, bagging litter and controlling invasive plants. They are also nursing newly planted native species to stabilize the soil and provide wildlife habitat.

Meet some fun people, make an impact, try something new and learn valuable tips for maintaining your own property.

Join us for as little or as much as you like.

Trails Day qualifies as a community-service project. Participants should bring sturdy footwear, work clothes, a hat, sunscreen and rain gear.

Liability waivers will be available and must be signed by all participants (under 18 need approval from—and are preferably accompanied by—a parent or guardian).

Equipment and snacks provided, but please pack your own lunch.

The hosts are the Spy Pond Environment Task Group (volunteers working in partnership with the Town of Arlington), the Appalachian Mountain Club and other civic groups.

This event is entirely outdoors, and the nature of the work will allow us to socially-distance while still enjoying each other's company. We take covid-protocols seriously and will be following the most current guidelines established by the state and the AMC.

The path needs more work than normal this year after a two-year delay.

This year Sustainable Arlington will be joining us for adopt-a-patch. The selected patch is adjacent to Spy Pond's concrete outlet (between stone bench and Lake Street).

Elaine Crowder will provide training at 9, followed by weeding of black swallow-wort.  The patch will be reseeded and documented.

Location is along the path that parallels Route 2, between Lake and Pleasant streets.

Recommended parking: take exit 60 off Rt. 2, head toward Mass. Ave. on Lake, first left onto Colonial Drive, left onto Roanoke, left and park along Spy Pond Parkway.

Rain date May 8. For more information, call 781-641-2506.
