Fifth annual Arlington Alive! held

Artisan booths, family arts area, award-winning storytelling, local food, live music free

Arlington Alive! LogoUPDATED, June 24: Broadway Plaza burst forth with the fifth annual Arlington Alive! Summer Arts Block Party on Saturday, June 24.

The free events from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., amid Arlington Center celebrated the arts in the community with live music, storytelling, artisan and craft booths, food vendors, and special activities for children and families.

Visitors heard an eclectic mix of live musical performances, featuring bluegrass with the Bagboys, pop hits with Aunt Mimi; soulful, swinging, funky and Latin jazz with Spy Pond Groove and ambient guitar with Arlington artist Alessio Miraglia

The festival featured two free puppet shows: "Cow and Mouse's Picnic" and the beautiful "Monkey Makes Mischief in Heaven," traditional Taiwanese hand puppets and choreography.

Menotomy Musical Theatre, an Arlington professional musical theater for young artists, performed excerpts from its latest production, "Hairspray."

The Boston Hoop Troop, New England's premiere hooping collective delighted attendees with hula hoops.

The Arlington Dance Place joined with an exciting performance.

Attendees enjoyed martial arts demos from local schools and many fun activities, including Lego making, an arts-and-crafts tent for children and face-painting.

The food pavilion included Not Your Average Joe's, Menotomy Grill & Tavern and Andrina´s Pizzeria -- plus a full menu from Common Ground, situated right on the plaza.

Artisan booths displayed their creations at the arts promenade. Unique visual artists' wares include live wheel-throwing demos, silk scarves, jewelry, photography, ceramics, crochet and ink painting.

Off-street parking was free at the Russell Commons Lot. The festival is easily accessible by MBTA buses 77 and 86.
