Town Day 2009 drew as many as 15,000 people Saturday, Sept. 26, the selectmen's office says, as good weather made the turnout and experience top-notch. As many as 5,000 attended the fireworks the night before, and they were considered "better" this year because the rockets' red glare were launched higher than last. An annual event since 1976, Town Day this year and last drew praise.
Roly Chaput, a member of the Redevelopment Board who is active in the Friends of Robbins Farm, called it "one of the best in recent memory."

Marie Krepelka, the selectmen's administrator, said Sept. 30 that, at the crowd's height Saturday, participants reported having difficulty getting through at Pleasant Street as well as past the Town Hall stage when the AHS Jazz Band and Madrigal Singers were performing.

On Friday afternoon, concessions sold 450 hamburgers and 350 hot dogs. The Rotary sold 400 sausages before running out.
The number of booths, at 232, were at capacity, and there was a two-page waiting list, she said.
Donations to help cover Town Day costs were "looking OK," she said, and final numbers are expected Oct. 5.
It may be too soon to think about, but next year's Town Day has been set for Saturday, Sept. 25.

The selectmen's office provided a full rundown of 2009 events, which took place Sept. 25 and 26.

Town Day information provided by the groups involved:
Fincom to have latest town financial forecasts
The Town Finance Committee will again operate a booth at Town Day to distribute financial information about the town and discuss these issues with citizens. Members will have the latest projection on town revenues and expenditures for the next five years, the record of town staffing for the last 20 years and various other information about municipal finances. The booth should be somewhere in front of the First Parish UU Church.
Trinity Baptist Church
Trinity Baptist Church is launching its involvement with The Penny Project. Church members will be raising awareness about local, regional, and national childhood poverty and collecting pennies (and more) that will go to local antipoverty projects.
Village Help for South Sudan
Village Help for South Sudan will have a booth showing its progress and its plans to bring education and opportunity to remote villages in South Sudan. There are two Arlington connections here -- Lisa Deeley Smith is a member of the board of directors, and Arlingtonian Malong Malual, AHS '04, is project manager of VHSS's Alal Community Project.
Bishop brings back Hi-Striker
The Bishop School PTO will, again, have a booth at Town Day this year.
Last year, the PTO had a very popular booth with Hi-Striker, a strength-test game, and it will be back for this year's Town Day. The Bishop PTO booth will also feature a 50/50 raffle, the prize is half the proceeds of the raffle with the Bishop PTO getting the other half to sponsor enrichment programs; a Mystery Goody Bag for the kids, $2 a bag, all contain treasure and a few contain special prizes such as Kooky Pens, Smencils, glow sticks and Kinzclips; and we'll be selling Bishop Birthday Bears to celebrate Bishop's 60th Birthday this year! Please stop by and say hello.

All day. All ages. First come-first printed!
