2 take out papers after Spangler declines to run

School Committee logoTwo days after incumbent School Committee member Ron Spangler announced he was not seeking a second term, two others have taken out papers, one of them a candidate in 2008. Judson L. Pierce, 42 Draper Ave., was unsuccessful in his 2008 bid. Also taking out nomination papers Jan. 28 was Marc Aaron Butler, 19 Overlook Road.

On Monday, Jan. 25, Kenneth W. Hughes, 20 Webster St., a retired police officer, took out papers on Jan. 25. There are now six potentially seeking two seats in the April town election.

Spangler, in an e-mail at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, wrote: "I'm not running for a second term. My volunteer time is more limited today than it was three years ago.

"I need to spend that time more efficiently, focusing only on activities that are consistent with my unrealized objectives, including raising interest in science and engineering, rationalizing the way we fund our schools, and improving accountability for student outcomes.

"I respect the people who step up to serve on the school committee, and I look forward to supporting good, constructive, progressive candidates in this and future elections."

Hughes, a retired town police officer with 26 years on the force before disability led to his leaving last summer, ran for School Committee in 1999. He was edged out in that race by Joani La Machia, who received 3,450 votes to Hughes's 2,766, a  difference of 684.

Hughes has been active in town issues, serving on the Arlington Retirement Board and the Health Insurance Advisory Committee.

Former School Committee Chairman Denise Burns has taken out papers, as has political newcomer to Kurt Fusaris and Teresa R. Bottoni. Burns is seeeking reelection.

The deadline to take out nomination papers is Thursday, Feb. 11, and they are due at the town clerk’s office Monday, Feb. 22.
