| School Committee candidate in 2001 takes out papers |
|
Asked Dec. 3 whether they are seeking reelection, Spangler declined to comment "at the moment," and Burns has not responded to two requests for comment. Bottoni, of 59 Crawford St., ran for School Committee in 2001. In that race, two were elected -- Suzanne Baratta Owayda, who received 4,382 votes; and Paul Schlichtman, who got 3,631. The longtime incumbent William A. Carey Jr. received 3,220 votes, and Bottoni 986. In a brief telephone interview Dec. 5, Bottoni said she aims to run to "give back to the community." She said she is a longtime Arlington resident who has a master's degree in education and is a substitute teacher in the Cambridge public schools, where she has taught for eight years. She said no one has urged her to run but is doing so on her own. Asked what issues she expected to pursue, she said she expected to study the current situation in the public schools further before defining clear goals. Preliminarily, she said, she favors healthier school lunches and, to address budget issues, she would eliminate world languages. In the 2007 town election, Burns had 3,192 votes and Spangler 2,941 to win three-year seats. Challengers were Josh Lobel 2,773, and Stuart Cleinman, 1,024. Joseph Curran won a one-year seat with 3,612 votes. The 2010 town election is set for Saturday, April 10.
