House Speaker DeLeo at Open House Feb. 18

Speaker of the state House of Representatives Robert A. DeLeo addressed Rep. Jay Kaufman's "Open House" on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Depot in Lexington Center. This forum will offer attendees the rare opportunity to hear firsthand the state Legislature's agenda for 2010 and beyond.

Among the questions addressed: What steps are being taken to stimulate the state economy and continue to move us out of the recession? How inevitable is the prospect of casino gambling? What's next on the job front?

In his year as speaker, DeLeo has presided over ground-breaking reforms of the state's ethics laws and pension system, led an effort to reorganize and streamline the state's transportation system, and, most recently, passed a major reform of the state's education system to tackle the stubborn and troubling problem of underperforming schools in the Commonwealth.

His advocacy of casino gaming and his opposition to any new taxes will both be tested in the coming weeks.  As with all guests to Representative Kaufman's forums, he knows that the floor is open to questions on any aspect of state policy or politics, and yours are invited and encouraged.  If you can't attend, e-mail your thoughts/questions to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Representative Kaufman's guest for the March 18 "Open House" will be Jeffrey Mullan, who serves in the governor's Cabinet as secretary of the newly created Department of Transportation.  His responsibilities include all state highways, the airports and maritime ports, bus systems and the T.

Open House, Rep. Kaufman's monthly public policy series, was launched in 1995 to provide a forum for discussing the challenges and opportunities facing our community and Commonwealth.  Over its 14 years, Open House has addressed issues ranging from reinventing public education to gay marriage, property tax relief to campaign finance reform, the shrinking middle class to stem cell research, the nature of political leadership to the challenges of effecting fundamental change in a democracy.

In 1997, Open House was awarded the prestigious Beacon Award, cable television's equivalent of an Emmy, as the nation's best government relations series.  The series was also named the best television series by Massachusetts Cable Television Commission. The series is produced through a partnership between Rep. Kaufman and LexMedia, which records the forums for broadcast in Lexington, Arlington and Woburn.

About YourArlington

Bob SpragueYourArlington.com is an experiment in community journalism dedicated to reporting news about Arlington, Mass., and the Arlington-related views of its residents. The experiment not unique but is part of a nationwide movement called "citizen journalism." The phrase gained currency through We the Media, a 2004 book by Dan Gillmor. This kind of journalism encourages members of a community to write about that community. The writing may be reporting, or it may be opinion.
