Let's be more open about the assessment-director process

Doherty Should a longtime member of the Board of Assessors be able to resign his position and then be among three finalists for full-time assessments director? That happened in Arlington this spring. Jim Doherty, a board member for 21 years, left the part-time job with its stipend on May 21 -- without public explanation. He then submitted his resume, among 14 other candidates for the town's top assessing position, whose salary range is $78,870 to $113,972. A screening committee has whittled d ...

    Site steers toward mobile display

YourArlington has a new look -- its seventh since the site began in 2006. Its latest suit of clothes reflects what the publisher hopes is a softer, more welcoming appearance. No hard-edged Herald here. You can see the changes in the color and typefaces. As for content, an area above the main news section -- where you are reading this item -- provides more prominence to opinion than has been true in the past.I'm pleased. Whether or not you are is a matter of taste. As always, all view ...

Our freedom to err -- and the responsibility to correct

The Fourth of July celebrates our nation's Declaration of Independence. YourArlington does, too. The independence and freedom that accompanies reporting news and opinion about Arlington also has its difficult sides -- among them, the freedom to make errors. Not that an editor wants to mess up, but it happens. When it does, the public should let the editor know. You can do it directly by email sprague.bob at gmail.com. Or, as a number did on the Arlington email list July 3, you can do it ind ...

The Circle in Marriage and in Marriage Equality

Offering the following opinion is Douglass Davidoff of Arlington. He is a public relations consultant, a five-year resident of Arlington, a member of the Arlington Human Relations Commission and a Town Meeting member for Precinct 4 in East Arlington. His website is www.DouglassDavidoff.com. The circle is a symbol of marriage. It’s the shape of the marriage ring, a model for relations between two people in a marriage. It’s also the shape of emotions of job I’ve had last month and again this m ...

AHS cheerleaders (500 px)

Another bowl appearance? Yes, and you can help. The Arlington High School varsity cheerleaders are having a car wash Saturday, Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. near Mass. Ave. Costs are $5 for cars and $10 for trucks.

All proceeds go directly to the cheerleaders only. We are on a fund-raising marathon not only for the cost of practice, game and competition uniforms, gym, clinic and many other costs to cheer, but we also have been invited tol perform at this year's Holiday Bowl in San Diego.

The team will perform at the Holiday Bowl half-time show before an expected 60,000 fans and march in the parade. I'm told Mandy Moore (not sure who she is, but kids know) also will perform with the Team. So, that's about another $1400 per cheerleader of additional fundraising.

The AHS cheerleaders, in photo, participated in their first college football bowl game last New Year's Day, when they traveled to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl. The bowl parade was Friday, Dec. 31. See the Boston.com story here >>

In the photo are (front row from left) Mariah Shannon, Mariah Jammal, Kayla Fitzgerald, Sophie Horvath, Steven Garcia, Shanyn Palmer, (second row) Katelyn Curran, Ashley Maher, Sydney Holman, Sarah Mitri, Carissa Martorana, AlexGonzales, (third row) Assistant Coach Rebecca Mahon, Assistant Coach Jacqui Pugliese, Melissa Thomas, Mariah Passos, Cassandra Crowley, Bianca Tauro, Sara Kiernan, and Coach Kelly Pugliese.
