Woman, 48, held without bail in stabbing of man, 31

APD logoA 48-year-old Arlington woman was held without bail after she was arraigned Tuesday on charges of assault with intent to murder in the stabbing of an Arlington man, 31. Deborah M. Canejo of 13 Scituate St. was charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and illegal possession of a class A controlled substance.

Canejo is being at MCI Framingham pending a dangerousness hearing set for Monday, July 2, police said June 27.

Brendan Coye of 100 Claremont Ave. underwent surgery for abdominal wounds at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, police said.

Police said the suspect and victim are not related and live separately. They had met earlier in the evening at a bar in Cambridge.

Arlington police provided the following account:

On June 26 at about 12:21 a.m. police responded to Gray and Scituate streets following the report of a stabbing.

They had received a 911 call from the victim, later identified as an Arlington resident. Also responding to the scene was Arlington Fire Rescue.

On arriving at Gray and Scituate, Coye was found sitting on the curb on the north side of Gray between Newport and Scituate streets. He was bleeding from a wound to the left side of his abdomen.

As officers and Fire Rescue rendered first-aid, the victim said a woman had stabbed him inside a nearby house. He said he did not know the exact address of that house. He provided police with aa description of the woman.

Police initiated a search of the area, assisted by Arlington Police K-9 Dasty. The search by police led to the first-floor apartment of #13/15 Scituate St.

After some initial delay, police were able to contact the first-floor resident, Deborah Canejo, who matched the description Coye provided. Following a brief interview with police detectives, Canejo was placed under arrest and taken to Arlington police headquarters.

Arlington police were asked for results of the Tuesday afternoon arraignment in Cambridge District Court, but they have not yet responded.

Police Chief Frederick Ryan told The Arlington Advocate that Coye and Canejo knew each other, but the events before the stabbing remain to be reported.

Ryan told the newspaper that police are investigating and plan to execute a search warrant.

Before her arraignment, Canejo was held at the Community Safety Building.
