| Dad polled from pool Sept. 4 dies |
|
Haranadh Gurajada had been in critical condition at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, and a spokesman there said he had died. His ?10-year-old son, Saiyasaswi Gurajada, also pulled from the pool Sept. 4, was transported to Children’s Hospital in Boston and has survived. Boston Globe story, Sept. 5 >> Witness reports indicate that the boy accidentally fell into the pool and the father, knowing the boy could not swim, jumped in the pool in an attempt to save him, police said. Preliminarily, this incident appears to have been an accident, and, according to Chief Frederick Ryan, "the extraordinary rescue efforts made by neighbors, firefighters, and police officers saved the boy’s life and will hopefully result in the same outcome for the dad." About 10:30 a.m., Arlington police and fire departments responded to Old Colony after receiving numerous 911 calls for a possible drowning. Christine Connolly, Arlington’s director of public health, told The Globe the pool passed an inspection in June. Connolly tested the pool’s water after the incident, and it met state regulations. State law allows semipublic pools to operate without lifeguards. The case remains under investigation by the Arlington Police Department. This story was first reported Saturday, Sept. 4, and updated Sept. 10 and 15. |
