| Arlington police Aug. 1-8: Deck fire, DUI arrest, sketchy salesman |
|
The Arlington Police Department responded to a wide variety of calls for service during the week of Aug. 1 to 8. A sampling of those calls appears below. • On Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 6:01 a.m., police were called to Spring Street and Hillside Road for a report of an injured raccoon in the street. Police used a specially modified shotgun, designed to kill animals, to euthanize it. Patrol Officer Brad Chella responded. • On Thursday, Aug. 5, at 1:49 p.m., police were called to Bay State Road for a report of a door-to-door solicitor in the neighborhood. Officers located the solicitor in the area, and he provided them with vague or possibly misleading answers to several basic questions they asked of him. Further investigation showed that neither the solicitor nor his employer were properly registered to solicit in Arlington, so he was directed to stop until registered. Patrol Officer John Kelley and Detective Lt. James Curran responded. • On Friday, Aug. 6, at 8:10 p.m., police and fire-rescue responded to a Milton Street residence for a report of a third-floor deck on fire. On arrival, the fire had already been extinguished by a resident and had been confined to a flower box on the deck. Fire personnel hosed down the deck as a precaution and investigated the cause of the fire. Patrol Officer Greg Flavin responded. • On Saturday, Aug. 7, at 2:15 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Pleasant Street involving a car into a telephone poll. On arrival, officers found the vehicle’s operator and questioned him about the accident, and the operator, William Mortell*, was subsequently arrested for operating under the influence and several traffic offenses. A passenger in the vehicle became uncooperative and belligerent to officers on scene and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Patrol Officers Brandon Kindle, Greg Flavin and James Kiernan responded. *All arrested persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. |
