The Arlington Police Department responded to a wide variety of calls for service during the weeks of July 18-24 and July 25-31. A sampling of those calls appears below.

• On Wednesday, July 21, at 6:40 a.m., Arlington Police Officer Michael Wesley was on patrol at Mystic Street/Mass. Ave. when he stopped a vehicle whose driver ran a red light at the intersection. During the course of the stop, Officer Wesley discovered that the driver’s license had expired more than seven years ago. The driver and the vehicle’s owner were cited for red light violation and unlicensed operation, and for allowing unlicensed operation, respectively.

• On Thursday, July 22, at 4:38 p.m., Arlington Police and Fire-Rescue were dispatched to the Tom Yum Koong restaurant on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Heights on a report of smoke in the building. Arlington Police Officer Douglas Cronin arrived first and evacuated the building and directed traffic around the scene. All on-duty fire-rescue personnel responded to extinguish the one-alarm fire, and the fire department will conduct a cause and origin investigation into what caused the fire.

• On Thursday, July 22, police took a report regarding someone trespassing and living in a vacant apartment on Walnut Street. A representative of the Somerville Homeless Coalition, which owns the apartment, found personal belongings belonging to former residents/clients of the coalition. Police assisted staff in securing the apartment, which is inhabitable due to flood damage, and police will step up patrols in the area. Patrol Officer Nick Stotik took the report.

• On Friday, July 23, at 1:15 a.m., police and fire-rescue were dispatched to Newland Road for a reported outside fire behind a house. Preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was caused by painting supplies that experienced spontaneous combustion when left under a drop cloth in the driveway. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it extended to the home, but a vehicle in the driveway did incur some fire-related damage. Patrol Officers Michael Wesley and Brad Chella responded.

• On Sunday, July 25, at 10:06 p.m., police were called to Robbins Farm Park to disperse a group of youths loitering in the park. On arrival, Patrol Officer Robert Gamez discovered a trash barrel on fire. Arlington fire-rescue responded and extinguished the fire, which was contained to the barrel.

• On Thursday, July 29, at 9:39 a.m., police were dispatched to Park and Wollaston avenues for a reported motor vehicle accident. Preliminary investigation showed that the operator of one of the involved vehicles was traveling at what witnesses described as "highway speeds" down Park Avenue, when she lost control of the vehicle and began spinning out of control. While spinning down the street, the operator struck the rear of another vehicle, that had pulled off to the side to attempt to avoid her, before coming to a rest in the middle of the street. The first operator was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision, and will be cited for multiple moving violations. The operator of the vehicle struck was not injured. Patrol Officers John Kelley, Stephen Porciello and Michael Hogan and Sgt. Michael Sheehan responded.

• On Thursday, July 29, at 9 p.m., police took a report from a Lansdowne Street resident whose MP3 player was stolen out of his unlocked vehicle the previous night. Patrol Officer Michael Wesley took the report.

• On Saturday, July 31, at 2:56 p.m., police were called to a Broadway residence for an injured skunk in the yard. Police euthanized the nearly immobile raccoon and the animal control officer picked up the remains. Patrol Officer Michael Foley responded.
