Arlington police June 27-July 4: Barrel fire, DUI arrest, rollover accident

The Arlington Police Department responded to a wide variety of calls for service during the week of June 27-July 4. A sampling of those calls appears below.

• On Monday, June 28, police were called to Robbins Farm on Eastern Avenue for a report of a barrel fire. An officer extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher and searched the area for suspects who may have set the fire, but none were found. Patrol Officer Nick Stotik responded.

• On Wednesday, June 30, at 11:12 a.m., police were called to the Walgreens in East Arlington for a report of a shoplifting. A manager had seen a customer walking around the store and allegedly placing items in her purse, but there was no stolen property in her purse when police arrived, so no charges were filed. The manager asked the alleged wouldbe shoplifter not to return to the store. Patrol Officer Mike Foley responded.

• On Friday, July 2, at 2:46 a.m., police arrested Ljubomir Vujisic*, 45, of Arlington, for operating under the influence of liquor and speeding. Patrol Officer Doug Cronin spotted Vujisic driving at 42 MPH in a 25 mph zone and pulled him over on Summer Street. Vujisic was glassy-eyed and couldn’t find his vehicle’s registration, so Cronin asked him to perform field sobriety tests. Vujisic stepped out of his vehicle, but needed to be reminded several times to put it in park, and he eventually needed to pull the emergency break to stop the vehicle from rolling after he left it in neutral. Vujisic then failed field sobriety tests and a Breathalyzer, and was arrested. Patrol Officers Doug Cronin, Jen McGurl and Steven Wilkins responded.

• On Sunday, July 4, at 9:17 p.m., police were called to Mystic Street for a report of a rollover accident. Initial investigation shows that the driver appeared to be going 60-70 mph while attempting to pass another vehicle on Mystic Street, when he crossed the center line and lost control of the vehicle. The rollover damaged a fence and knocked over a fire hydrant. The driver was transported to a local hospital following the accident; he was also cited for operating to endanger, speeding and marked lanes violation. Patrol Officers Scott Urquhart, Rajat Sharda and John Kelley and street supervisor Sgt. Rick Pedrini responded.

*All arrested persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
