| Cars hit pedestrians crossing Mass. Ave. |
|
At 4:52 p.m. two officers were sent to Mass. Ave. and Marathon Street after a pedestrian was struck. Police saw a male lying in the crosswalk in the middle of Mass. Ave. Directly in front of the injured man was a parked vehicle. The victim told police he was crossing Mass. Ave. in the crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle that did not stop for him. Arlington Fire and Rescue transported the man to Beth Israel. The operator, Cynthia Marcelo, 40, of Burlington, said she was driving a 2006 black Toyota Corolla west on Mass. Ave. when a man ran out in front of her vehicle. She said that by the time she saw him, she could not stop her vehicle in time. Police talked to a witness, who said she was traveling west on Mass. Ave. to the right of Marcelo's vehicle when she stopped to let a pedestrian cross who was walking in the crosswalk. She said the vehicle to her left did not stop and then struck the victim. Police cited Marcelo for a crosswalk violation. Just a few minutes later, at 5:03 p.m., police responded to Mass Ave. at Fessenden Road, near Mirak. Upon arrival, a 61-year-old New Hampshire man was lying in the eastbound lane of Mass. Ave. Three witnesses reported he was hit by vehicle while attempting to get into his. Police officer spoke with the victim, who was conscious and said he did not know what hit him. The last thing he said he remembered was walking to his vehicle. Arlington Fire officials treated him for possible back and neck injuries. His left leg was also in pain and he had a cut on his forehead. Armstrong Ambulance transported him to Beth Israel. The operator of 1989 blue Toyota Tercel involved in the collision, Sean Fedele, 54, of Arlington told police he was traveling east on Mass. Ave. at 25 mph and saw the victim run across Mass. Ave. from west to east. He said he saw the victim by the driver's door of his vehicle and thought he had enough room to get by, but he opened the door and "clipped him." He said the victim went over the front hood of his vehicle and onto the street. Fedele waited for help to arrive. One witness said she was parked on Mass. Ave. and saw a blue hatchback coming down Mass. Ave. hit the victim crossing the street. A second witness said she was on the west side of Mass. Ave. and said she saw the victim struck as he was opening a car door. He was hit from behind, and it looked like he was thrown backward and was lying flat on his back. A third witness driving on Mass. Ave. said she noticed a man crossing Mass. Ave. and was almost across, but was hit and went flying over the hood of the vehicle that hit him. Fedele received a citation for operating a motor vehicle to endanger (Ch.90, Sec.24). He was advised to file an accident report. |

Crossing Mass. Ave. can be dicey, as two pedestrians found Monday, June 28, after cars hit them, minutes apart. One accident occurred in an East Arlington crosswalk on a part of Mass. Ave. that is included in the plan to revamp the major thoroughfare. The other was in the Heights. In both cases, drivers were cited, and the pedestrians were treated at Beth Israel Hospital.
