| Officer says he was kicked before AHS student subdued by pepper spray |
|
A 15-year-old student at Arlington High was subdued with pepper spray by the school’s resource officer on Wednesday, Feb. 15, and charged with assault and battery on an officer and trespassing. About 9:15 a.m. Dean Veronica Tivnan contacted Ned Walsh, the resource officer at Arlington High School, and he met her in Room 226, according to a police report, which provided this narrative: On arrival, a student was standing in the hallway outside of that room speaking with staff, including Assistant Vice Principal William McCarthy. The student was speaking loudly and was visibly upset. McCarthy asked her to come to his office, which is nearby. McCarthy asked what was going on, and the student said Tivnan "was a bitch and a fucking liar." The student, who had just returned to school after a five-day suspension, did not understand the reason for it. Because of the student’s behavior that morning, McCarthy and Tivnan called for another five-day suspension. After staff from Germaine Lawrence School arrived, the student was asked to leave the property and could face arrest. After Walsh made a similar request, the student noted a prior arrest and had no fear of "fuckin’ cops." Walsh requested backup, and a struggled ensued. The report says the student punched and kicked Walsh. When the student continued to resist, the officer used pepper spray and was able to put handcuffs on the teen. In an email to parents, interim Principal Mary Villano wrote that "for safety reasons, the other students in the classroom were asked to leave the area. Unfortunately, the student’s behavior continued to escalate and additional police were called in to assist our SRO. "The police eventually subdued the student with the use of pepper spray and the student was removed from the building. The situation is now under control. In the coming days, our guidance counselors and social workers will be available to offer support and meet with any students who might feel the need to discuss the incident.
