Police say man with heroin charged near Ottoson

Robert EdwardsAn Arlington man was arrested Monday, Dec. 12, near Ottoson Middle School with more than 35 grams of heroin and $9,561, police said.

Robert R. Edwards, 31, was arrested on charges of possession of heroin and trafficking drug violation near a school or park, police said.

A police reported provided this account:

Following a car stop at Mass. Ave. and Richardson in which Edwards was the passenger in the vehicle, officers on scene reported the operator and passenger were acting suspiciously so they asked for consent to have the Department's K9 search the vehicle.

Edwards exited the vehicle on request and was asked whether he had any weapons on him. He stated no and began to pat himself down as to show that he had no weapons. He also showed police the insides his pockets but excluded one pocket in his jacket his left breast.

Asked what was inside that pocket, he opened the pocket, revealing a large roll of money, police said.

Edwards removed it and said he doesn't use banks and has a job.

Police shined a flashlight to the right of the vehicle into a small garden area and saw a baseball-size plastic baggie, wrapped in elastic bands, which contained a brown powdery substance.

Edwards was placed under arrest and transported to the Arlington Police Department, where he was booked. At booking, Edwards had the following amounts of money on him: $5,500 in one money roll, $1,579 in another roll, $110.00 in cigarette box and $2,372, a total of $9,561.

The powder was weighed at 35.5 grams and field-tested positive for heroin.

He was charged with trafficking in heroin/morphine/opium and a drug violation near a school or park.

the report says: "It is of this inspector's opinion that the location of the motor vehicle stop and arrest was within 1,000 feet of the Ottoson School."
