Governor Patrick, Sean Garballey at Arlington Diner, Feb. 13, 2008
How many local politicians can you name? Democratic candidate Sean Garballey and Gov. Deval Patrick attract quite a crowd at the Arlington Diner on Feb. 13./ Mike McCabe photo

Democrat Sean Garballey, who faces Republican John L. Worden III next month in the general election for state representative for the 23rd Middlesex district, drew the endorsement this morning of Gov. Deval Patrick at the Arlington Diner. Supporters reported the event took place despit uncertain weather -- snow changing to rain.

Stephen Crawford of Crawford Strategies in Arlington, Patrick's political adviser, wrote in an e-mail Feb. 13:

"I don’t have the governor’s exact words, but let there be no misunderstanding, Deval Patrick endorsed Sean Garballey for state representative this morning."

The Garballey campaign approved the following statement Feb. 13:
"Despite the awful weather, the Arlington Restaurant and Diner on Massachusetts Avenue in East Arlington was a very busy place. Governor Patrick was there at the diner to show support for his friend, Sean Garballey.
"Liz Morningstar [Patrick aide] made clear that Governor Patrick has known Sean for some time, as Sean was an active worker in Governor Patrick’s campaign, and proved himself a tireless worker who could bring people together to get the job done!  Governor Patrick showed his friendship and support for Sean Garballey today.
"Quite a few others were there also to show support. Among those present was: Sheriff [James] DiPaola, Sean Fitzgerald [Rep. Jay Kaufman’s chief of staff; Kaufman was traveling out of state], Rep. Will Brownsberger, Selectwoman Annie LaCourt, Selectwoman Diane Mahon, Selectwoman Clarissa Rowe, Selectman Jack Hurd, Medford Mayor Michael McGynn [who was himself once elected a state rep at the age of 22], Medford Councilman Paul Camuso, the Chairwoman of the Deval Patrick Committee Liz Morningstar, former representive Joe Daly, Michael McCabe, retired Thompson principal and chair of the Garballey campaign; former School Committee member Mike Healey, Town Meeting member Marc Butler, as well as reporters from The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald.
"Governor Patrick made sure to greet everyone, whether former representative Daly, or local children having breakfast due to the two-hour delay in the start of school due to the truly awful weather. "

It's hard to ignore Sen. Marzilli's absence. Was he there and omitted from the
photo or did he decide not to make this the occasion for his endorsement of
Garballey?
