Deborah Sirotkin Butler of Arlington, a lawyer, was elected Feb. 5 to the 4th Middlesex State Democratic Committee, representing Arlington, Lexington, Burlington, Woburn and
Billerica. She will serve as a liaison betwen the state and town party committees. She was also elected to the Town Democratic Committee.
She expects to attend as many of the meetings of each
committee "as life will allow," she said.
Patricia Deal was the state Democratic Committeewoman from the 4th Middlesex
Senate District for 20 years
and became a lifetime member, so that she no longer has to stand for election,
and the 4th Middlesex seat opened up.
"I will be learning the
ropes for the next several months," she said. "This is both a policy-making
position and a working position as to the nuts and bolts of running a
state party. For example, the SDC members vote on and select the
Democratic National Committee men and women. The SDC is responsible
for putting on the State Democratic Convention among other items."
Butler provided the following statement of thanks:
"I feel amazed, now that it is over, to have received 9,158 votes for State Committeewoman. You also gave me 6,623 votes for the Town Democratic Committee.
"That means I had best work hard, to show respect and appreciation for those votes from so many fellow citizens. I promise to work hard, to always answer phone calls and e-mails, and to learn how to best communicate the many ways that the State Democratic Committee and the Town Democratic Committee -- despite all being unpaid positions -- strive for a more democratic, opon socieity where all Massachusetts residents receive fair, equal treatment and the services and infrastructure that are required for a civilized society.
"None of those goals for which all democrats strive just happen 'by themselves' -- and I am going to do my best to learn my rolea and perform it in a way to earn your votes again in four years. ...
"The Democratic Party welcomes each and every one of you to attend the Town Committee, and I hope you will. ...
"14,873 Democratic ballots were issued in Arlington, according to the Town Clerk -- ALL the candidates are to be congratulated in encouraging this level of participation. Thanks to Sean Garballey - for a strong grassroots campaign, for Jeff Thielman's willingness to serve and gracious concession, and for newcomer Andrew O'Brien whom I hope will participate in the Town Committee and the governance of the town going forward.
"Please feel free to attend the Town Democratic Meetings - and to contact me. I went from an unenrolled voter to a Democrat in 2003 -- and feel that I have been richly rewarded by being able to contribute to causes and issues that matter."
