Former School Committee member Paul Schlichtman, now a school administrator in Lowell, was among two finalist for the position of superintendent of Berlin-Boylston schools interviewed publicly Feb. 6. "Berlin-Boylston is an excellent little district," Schlichtman told YourArlington via e-mail Feb. 7. "When I toured their buildings, I saw many great things happening, and it would be an honor to be chosen to help lead them to the next level."
Each candidate faced questions for more than an hour about how to improve schools under tight budget conditions. Schlichtman said Berlin and Boylston should build on their strengths — high-quality teachers and a trustful, close-knit community.
The other finalist interviewed Feb. 6 is Brian McDermott, assistant superintendent and business manager of Ayer Public Schools. A decision is expected to be made in March.
A third finalist is Roseli Weiss of Medfield, director of curriculum and instruction of the Southbridge public schools. She was interviewed earlier.
Schlichtman was a member of the Arlington School Committee from 2001 until last April, when he did not seek reelection.
Schlichtman, coordinator of research testing and assessment for Lowell public schools, was among six interviewed in February 2007 for school superintendent in Milford. He was out of the running in that district after the Milford School Committee decided to restart the interview process.
On Feb. 7, the Worcester Telegraph & Gazette provided the following account of the interviews by the Berlin-Boylston School Committee.
