Graduate student Sean Garballey, 22, riding a wave of voter resentment linked to the Ottoson e-mail scandal, beat out fellow School Committee veteran Jeffrey Thielman in the primary election Feb. 5 for the 23rd Middlesex district. Garballey received 5,741 votes to Thielman's 5,321. First-time candidate Andrew O'Brien got 1,280 votes. According to totals reported by the Thielman campaign at the American Legion, voting in Arlington among 15 precincts went this way: Garballey, 4,667; Thielman, 4,098; and O'Brien, 883.

Thielman told YourArlington Feb. 6: "I congratulate Sean Garballey on his election victory and look forward to voting for him in the general election on March 4th.

"I’m thankful to everyone who worked on our campaign and to the 5,321 people who cast a ballot for me.  It was a privilege to meet so many wonderful people across the district.  I will continue to work to help our community and our state."

Garballey told YourArlington Feb. 7:

"I'm ecstatic and grateful to my family and friends, and I am looking forward to bringing people together to work on the issues facing Arlington and West Medford. I've always believed that the best resource of the Commonwealth is it's people, and tonight the people spoke.

"I am grateful for the campaigns that Mr. Thielman and Mr. O'Brien ran. They added a lot to this conversation and I wish them the very best as they continue to serve Arlington.

"I will bring the same message of hope and bringing people together as the campaign moves towards the general election and I look forward to continuing the conversation on how to improve the quality of life for the people of our district."

Thielman got the most votes among three precincts in West Medford -- 1,223 -- to Garballey's 1,074 and O'Brien's 397.

The percentages went this way:

Arlington -- Garballey, 48.4%; Thielman, 42.5%; O'Brien, 9.2%.

Medford -- Garballey, 39.9%; Thielman, 45.4%; O'Brien, 39.9%.

Garballey, a graduate of the Thompson School and supported by formed Thompson Principal Mike McCabe, drew support from those East Arlington precincts that vote at Thompson. Precincts 1 and 5 voted decisively by Garballey, vice chairman of the School Committee.

In Precinct 3, which votes at Thompson, Thielman, former chairman of the School Committee, drew 242 votes, seven more than Garballey.

Thielman scored heavily in Precinct 8 and well in 10, both traditional Marzilli strongholds. In 10, Thielman got 388 votes to Garballey's 304. In 8, Thielman had 515 to Garballey's 214.

At the American Legion on Feb. 5, Paul Schlichtman records the numbers on his laptop as Thielman supporters see them projected on a screen.

But in Precinct 19, where unions supporting Garballey are strong, the 22-year-old received 401 votes to Thielman's 241.

Other precincts that went to Garballey were 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 18.

In the general election March 4 for the seat on Beacon Hill, Garballey will face Republican John Worden III and independent Robert Valeri. Worden was unopposed in the primary, where he received 1,732 votes.

The seat, vacated by Marzilli when he was elected senator in December, will be contested again next fall.

Garballey had the endorsements of the Boston Herald and numerous unions. Thielman was endorsed by The Boston Globe and Sen. Jim Marzilli.

Calling a successful grassroots candidate an "upstart" gives the
appearance of bias and pique. I suggest that a far more professional title
would be "Grassroots campaign elects Garballey". I voted FOR Garballey,
not against any other candidate. I have known Sean Garballey for six years. He
is who I want to represent me. Nearly 100% of the donations to Sean's campaign
were from the citizens who he will represent in Arlington. All of the campaign
workers for Sean Garballey were volunteers. I know - I worked with a group of
citizens who live in my precinct, Precinct 19 and we voted about 60% for Sean
Garballey because we know who Sean is - and that Sean like Paul Camuso in
Medford represents the best of the next generation of elected officials in
Massachusets.

avatar You're right. I changed the word "upstart" in the original lead. I
forgot to change it in the head last night. I have done so now.

You're absolutely right, Deborah. This headline is one more sign of bias by this
website against winner Sean Garballey. By the way, it's time to remove your
unofficial poll predicting Thielman the winner. Sean ran a clean, grassroots
campaign and deserves the congratulations and support of this website and all of
the district.

avatar As you can see, Anne, I answered Deb's concern before you posted. As for the
poll, it reflects how visitors to the site voted and is labeled
"unscientific." Its results will remain for as long as the site
live.

How about some cheer and glee for Sean's win?

Bob, Trust me, there is plenty of glee and cheer for
Sean's win! Sean is a credit to Arlington and I am proud of him! I think
that some were just annoyed that you would even contemplate
"upstart".
admin  - Advocate online headline     |SAdministrator |2008-02-06 11:26:45
avatar I have reviewed the 26 comments (so far) under The Advocate's story about Sean's
win (http://www.wickedlocal.com/arlington/homepage/x14 2944115), and I see no
one remarking on the headline there, "Garballey's moving on"

Where's
he going? I believe he remains in Arlington to face John Worden in the March
general election.

For the record, I congratulate Sean for his victory and
hope the party can concentrate on its next task and not dwell on the anger of
the past.
Deborah Sirotkin Butler  - A real apology is always welcome   |68.163.207.xxx |2008-02-06 15:15:42
Dear Bob: Thank you for an honest apology. You took responsibility for your
error and fixed it.

I call that a real apology! Examples of false apologies
are, for example "I am sorry you did not like what I did" or "I am
sorry that my actions had the results they did."

A true apology such as
Bob's always includes restitution and takes full responsibility.

A false
apology generally blames the victim, or bemoans the results but not the
unfortunate choice by the person making a "false apology".

Bob
Sprague's apology was dignified, and a real apology because he owned and
remedied his error.
leeleeiam  - I dont get it   |Author |2008-02-10 05:12:39
I don't get this. Why are people so happy to elect a pro union kid who doesn't
yet understand the pros and cons of what collective bargaining brings to the
table to a town with limited funding. He's supposed to be for Arlington - his
people - not the pro union backers who are only looking our for themselves. Does
Sean not get that "WE" the middle class support the health care and
pension benefits of his union supporters? Does Sean not get this is not fair?
Does Sean - a 22 year old college student not understand that it takes a lot of
money to support a household and pay towards health care coverage - as a nurse I
pay $130.00/wk for family coverage where as the union members in Arlington pay
much, much less than that? Does Sean care more about his Union supporters or
his fellow Arlingtonians? I wonder - a kid is a kid is a kid. Grow up Sean -
live a life and come back and run a race after you've lived in the real w...
leeleeiam  - wrong,wrong - love sean but hate the message   |Author |2008-02-10 06:04:12
But why, Nanci? It's amazing to me that we can be on the same side on certain
issues or for certain folks but comes along one candidate and all hell can break
loose. I honestly don't get the Sean Garballey love fest. I can only chalk it up
to the fact that he professes his love for the unions any chance he gets. As a
22 year old kid living at home with Mom and Dad - does he honestly think that he
can tell the difference between what collective bargaining can mean to a town or
not? Has he paid property taxes? Does he get that the last prop 2 1/2 override
to the tune of $6 million dollars (mostly to support a health care coverage
budget buster for town union employees) impacts his constituents. Sean -
seriously - you are probably a great kid - but buy a house in Arlington, pay
some taxes, get married have a few kids and then run for Rep.....then, and only
then...would I have the slightest amount of respect for you and your
