Symmes Hospital demolition photos: January 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bob Sprague

Symmes Hospital, a landmark high above Arlington since it opened in 1912, began coming down the day after Christmas 2007 to make way for the largest construction project in town history. Photographs provided at the request of YourArlington  by JPI, the project's majority partner, show the progress of demolition during three days in January.

Jan. 8: Symmes update from December: background about demolition

Since Dec. 26, the general public, viewing Symmes from the rear of Stop & Shop at Mass. Ave., for example, could see windows emptied of their glass, the long-closed hospital a ghost of its former self. But by Jan. 9 through 11, more was going on, as this photo series shows:

Those familiar with the hospital's various wings may have memories connected to what is coming apart at the behest of demolition equipment from North American Site Developers.

The company, which was involved in such projects as the demolition of the old Boston Garden, is working under a contract of about $740,000, according to JPI's Michael Salguero, who provided the photographs.

Demolition is expected to continue until the end February or the beginning of March. The work is expected to be slow, with the old hospital coming apart bit by bit.

The partnership building the project, called Symmes 360, is known as Symmes Redevelopment Associates. That comprises two companies -- JPI of Southborough and E.A. Fish of Braintree, originally designated the developer.

Monitoring the project are the Symmes Neighborhood Advisory Committee in partnership with Kevin Nigro, the town's designated site representative.
