School Committee has 5 potential candidates PDF Print E-mail

The race for School Committee, which has three seats up for grabs in the 2008 town election, now has five potential candidates. Joseph Tully, an unsuccessful candidate in 2003, and Joseph Curro, chairman of the town's Human Rights Commission, have signaled their intentions to run. So have Leba Heigham, Joseph E. Curran, and incumbent Sean Garballey.

Tully announced his candidacy on the Arlington e-mail list Jan. 22. Curro took out papers Jan. 15.

Heigham, 82 Richfield, took out papers Jan. 17.

Joseph E. Curran, 5 Hodge Road, took out papers Jan. 17. He is serving out the unexpired term of Marty Throps.

Sean Garballey, 45 Maynard St., took out papers Jan. 22. The incumbent is also running for state representative.

Joseph Curro Curro has posted his views about his candidacy on his Web site, www.joecurro.info/.

Incumbent members Susan Lovelace, the committee's chairwoman, and Sean Garballey have not yet taken out papers. Statements from Lovelace and Garballey about their plans are expected soon.

Lovelace took out papers for state representative, but fell four signatures short of the number required. Garballey, the committee vice chairman, is running for state representative, facing Jeff Thielman and Andrew E. O'Brien in the Feb. 5 primary.

Joseph E. Curran, who is completing the term of Martin Thrope, has not responded to a request from YourArlington for comment about a potential candidacy.

In addition, Richard Murray, the incumbent, took out papers Jan. 15 for Housing Authority. Patricia B. Worden has taken out papers for the seat.

Tully announced Jan. 22:

"I have decided to run for a seat on Arlington's School Committee. Please join me at my home, 329 Gray Street (on the corner of Quincy), this Sunday (Jan 27th) from 10:00 a.m - 12:30 pm for coffee and bagels and to sign my nomination papers (or just come by to say hello so I can put a face to those of you I haven't met personally).  Best of luck to those already in the race, and those about to enter."

Curro announced on the Arlington list Jan. 22:

"If you have not already found your way to it through other channels, I would like to direct you to the announcement of my candidacy for a seat on the School Committee, which can be found at http://www.JoeCurro.info/.  I am the father of two daughters, a first-grader at the Stratton School and a preschooler at Sunshine Nursery School, and I am running primarily to ensure the quality of their education and that of other Arlington public school
students in these difficult times.  I have been involved in public service in Arlington for many years as a Town Meeting Member, past chair of the Human Rights Commission, and past chair of the Symmes Neighborhood Advisory Committee.

"I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss the issues facing our schools with residents, teachers, and everyone who cares about our kids' future, including my fellow candidates.  I hope to earn one of your three votes for School Committee on April 5, and I would welcome any inquiries or offers of support."
