James Marzilli, swept to victory in December in a decisive win over his Republican rival, was sworn in Jan. 10 as the new senator representing Arlington and West Medford. Marzilli had been state representative since 1990, and he takes the Senate seat help by Robert Havern until August.

Marzilli was named a co-chairman for the Senate Committee on Tourism, Arts & Cultural Development, replacing Sen. Brian Joyce, reported Dan Hunter, executive director of the Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences & Humanities.

In a press release, he wrote that Senate President Therese Murray has appointed Marzilli, Democrat of Arlington, the new co-chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development.

He joins the House chairman, Rep. Eric Turkington, Democrat of Falmouth, replacing Joyce, Democrat of Milton, who was named chairman of the Committee on Community Development and Small Business.

The arts group said it welcomes Marzilli who has been a longtime friend of the arts, sciences and humanities.  "He understands that challenges faced by nonprofit cultural organizations, and he currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the New England Wildflower Society," Hunter wrote.

"He has a distinguished record of public service in Arlington."
