Guy Van DuserNikki HuHardy artists-in-residence, dancer and choreographer Nikki Hu and musician-composer Guy Van Duser, joined the school's community for breakfast Jan. 7. In attendance were many Hardy parents, members of the Hardy PTO and Hardy Enrichment Committee as well as Superintendent Nate Levinson; Pasquale Tassone, chairman of fine arts for the Arlington public schools; Massachusetts Cultural Council representative Diane Daily, Arlington Cultural Council representative, Stephanie Curiel and AEEF representative Brendan O'Day.

Hu, Steve Swanson and Deb D'Amico  talked about the suite of dances being created at Hardy, "Inclusion on the Playground," and Nikki and Guy showed a short DVD, a preliminary sampler about the creative process, "Exploring the Playground."

Additionally, Steve Swanson spoke on dance in the P.E. curriculum and the playground culture at Hardy.  The MCC's representative, Diane Daily gave insights about the importance of the arts in education and Nicole Libresco talked about the importance of the collaboration among the artists and Steve Swanson and the way in which children are integral to the creative process.

ive Hardy students, Abby Bucci, Emmett Foster, Grace Hoglund, Brianna Varris and Jack Libresco-Puckett demonstrated portions of the dance suite and BriannaVarris and Jack Libresco-Puckett talked about what creating the dances meant to them

This is the second year of Hardy's MCC Creative Schools Grant, and it is sponsored by grants from the Hardy PTO, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Arlington Cultural Council.  The project is a collaboration between  Nikki, Guy and Steve Swanson.

Additionally, it includes Hardy music teacher Janet Welby and Hardy art teacher Deborah Martin, as well as author Pamela
Powell. They will continue to create and implement a suite of dances about inclusion on the playground and a performance will be scheduled in the spring.

A huge thank you to Hardy Principal Deb D'Amico and the Hardy PTO for supporting the arts at Hardy and to the Hardy PTO for co-sponsoring Nikki Hu and Guy Van Duser's residency at Hardy.  Additionally, a big thank you to Nellie Aikenhead for organizing the breakfast and to the many, many members of the Hardy PTO for making the breakfast a big success.

Stay tuned for the spring performance date.
