The Arlington High School visual arts department unveiled "The River of Hands Mural," a large tile mosaic, in the AHS lobby, on Jan. 17, three days after snow postponed the original unveiling. It was worth the short wait, as the public can see in the photo above or in the larger version below.
The AHS School Improvement Committee requested a professional-development workshop for teachers that was hands-on, collaborative and that would engender creative team effort.
Under the guidance of visual-art teachers Nancy Muise and David Moore, approximately 100 teachers and school administrators and 121 art students created clay sculptures of their own hands.
Under the supervision of Muise, AHS advanced-ceramic students created the mural.
Twenty-one student artists were involved in the planning, design and assemblage of this project.
Two feet high, the mural spans the walls of a 70-foot corridor, and its design includes more than 7,000 handmade tiles and glass tesserae.
Student artists were:
Jennifer Attanasio, Sophie Baboin, Nicolas Diaz, Todd Ferreira, Sarah Fischer, Emily Fuller, Allison Hall, Elizabeth Harris, John Jantz, Leandra Jones, Madeleine Kotiuga, Bonnie Leung, Molly Lobel, Sean Logan, Katherine Rielly, Phoebe Rosen, Daniel Russoniello, Joao Schmidt, Amanda Scotto, Tenzin Tsungmey and Sean Ugur.
