Summer study:  Arlington Public Schools is offering two math courses for students this summer.  A two-week Basic Math Skills Review Course for any student entering 8th or 9th grade will integrate class work, computer lab, and projects.  The tuition for the course is $130. The class will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. five days a week from August 4 to 15 at Ottoson.  An algebra course for students entering grade 9 will also be offered.

Summer reading:
entering 6th-grade students are expected to read Crash by Jerry Spinelli and Rules by Cynthia Lord as well as one choice book (a total of three books); entering 7th-grade students are expected to read one of the following books, City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, Flush by Carl Hiassen or Belle Prater's Boy by Ruth White as well as four other choice books (a total of five books); entering 8th-grade students are expected to read Tangerine by Edward Bloor as well as five choice books (a total of six books); and all outgoing 8th-grade students are expected to read Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie by David Lubar and a choice selection (a total of two) and in addition, students entering honors and advanced English are expected to read A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly.

All of this information is available on the APS Web site. Research shows that students who read at least 6 books during summer months improve their literacy skills. Please encourage your students to read!

We're still looking for library and text books.  Please help your student search all corners of the house for OMS materials. We'd rather have the books than the money!

(I began this e-mail Monday afternoon and finished it Tuesday morning.)  It was an honor to speak at the 5th-grade recognition ceremony at the Bishop school last night. Bishop students as well as those at Dallin, Pierce, Thompson, Hardy, Stratton and Brackett are ready to move on to grade 6, and we welcome them.

This is the last official weekly update for the year.  We wish our 8th-grade students much success as they face the challenges ahead and hope that all our Ottoson families have a restful and renewing summer.
