Five-year School Committee member Jeff Thielman announced Dec. 12 that he is seeking the State House seat that Rep. Jim Marzilli has held for 17 years now that the rep will become a senator. In a post to the Arlington list, Thielman wrote, "I also want you to know that, win or lose, I will complete my term on the School Committee, which ends in April 2009." The first news outlet to publish the story was InsideMedford.com.
Thielman is reported to have a large mailing ready to go to potential voters.
He offered his congratulations to Marzilli. "Jim and I have enjoyed a very good working relationship, and I look forward to continuing this relationship with our new senator," he wrote.
He noted that that the primary election for the 23rd Middlesex House seat (Arlington and West Medford) is set for Feb. 5, the same day as the presidential primary, and the general election March 4.
He wrote: "My experience serving on the Arlington School Committee over the past 5 years has made me keenly aware of the need for strong relationships between the state and local government, and my understanding of these issues will be critical to representing you in the Legislature.
"During the campaign I look forward to the opportunity to present my views on the environment, healthcare, education issues, support for human service programs, and funding for cities and towns like Arlington and Medford. This is an important time in the state Legislature.
"As the governor begins his second year in office, proposals to close corporate tax loopholes, give communities more flexibility to enhance revenue, and other ideas that impact our town will be considered by the Legislature. If elected, I will be an effective advocate for Arlington during these important policy and budget debates."
Thielman wrote that as he has done in races for the School Committee, he "will spend the next seven weeks knocking on doors and meeting people all over the district. I want to hear your views and ideas on issues facing Arlington, West Medford, and the Commonwealth, and will work hard to develop and strengthen relationships with people throughout our community."
