Kids on dog statues

You don't want to publish only words -- you want to illustrate what you're writing  about with images. They may be photographs, cartoons, logos -- anything you want to display, usually as .jpg or .gif files, but there are other formats. Here is a guide to working with images on YourArlington.com.

To be able to post images to YourArlington, you must be authorized to do so. To get authorization, the publisher must give it to you. If you want that authorization, ask.

If you get authorization, you'll get the Web address from which you may work with images. You'll need that. It the publisher forgets to tell you what it is, march over to his house and demand it. Or try e-mail.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Save the digital image to your desktop (or wherever you want).
  • Resize it to 400 pixels wide, maximum, or smaller. (You may use images that are wide as 600 pixels, but they must be on their own page and not the site's front page.) Logos are usually no wider than 125 pixels.
  • Log in with your usual username and password.
  • Go to http://www.yourarlington.com/joomla/administrator/index2.php
  • Click on Media Manager.
  • Go to Directory (top left) and pull down to /stories, followed by the directory in which you choose to save the image (if you do not see a directory or subdirectory that makes sense for your image, you may create one, but it's wise to ask the publisher about this first).
  • Go to file upload and find your image.
  • Hit the upload button (top right), and your iamge has been loaded into the directory you chose.

At this point, you will need to create a file or find an existing one in which you want your image to appear. The steps that follow describe making a new file for content:

  • Go back to the main manager screen and click on Add New Content.
  • That creates a window into which you can add text or image. To add an image, click the image link at the bottom of the top editing window (insert image). This inserts a snippet of code that Joomla reads as an image tag.
  • Put a headline in the top title window.
  • Choose a Section and a Category.
  • Hit the Apply button at the top right (circle with a check mark) to save as you go.
  • Click on the images tab (near top right).
  • Find your photo in /stories/ (in the directory you chose) in the Sub-folder and click the >> button to move it to the right.
  • Highlight the image that is now at the right.
  • Hit image align, choosing the way you want the image aligned (left, center or right).
  • Enter your alt text information (a very brief description of what the image shows).
  • Add border width (usually 1 or 2).
  • Add a caption.
  • Choose how you want the caption aligned (left, center or right).
  • For caption width, enter a number that is a bit larger than the image width; that is, for an image 300 pixels wide, choose 307.

VERY IMPORTANT:
You must then hit the small Apply button at the bottom of the images tab, or you will lose all you have entered.

  • Then hit the Apply button at top right.
  • Once you're satisified, hit the Save icon at the top, and if the published box is checked (on the Published tab), the image will be published.
  • Take a look at the published image and make sure that it looks the way you want. If it doesn't, return to the screens described above and adjust.

Easy, huh?
