Mellea, a senior from Arlington, broke the 27-year-old with a time of 4:03:26 at last year's Boston University Invitational. In doing so, Mellea beat his previous personal best by eight seconds. When asked about his thoughts on breaking the school record, Mellea replied, "I didn't realize breaking a school record is as big as everyone is making it out to be. It's just a time, and there's still more that needs to be done." Patrick ran 70 miles per week to train for the spring season and planned to increase that number to 90 in preparation for cross-country in the fall.

Nagasaki mayor, ex-Arlington resident speaks out Tadatoshi Akiba addresses lessons learned from Hiroshima (Dick Smith, Arlington list)

Dick Smith wrote to the Arlington list on Aug. 9:

Three days ago, many countries remembered what happened on August 6, 1945, the day an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

Tadatoshi Akiba, now the Mayor of Nagasaki - and formerly a resident of Arlington - made an impassioned speech about lessons which were learned, or should have been learned, from Hiroshima.

Mayor Akiba, Tad, as we used to call him, was a frequent speaker at orientation meetings of Arlington's Japan Sister City program/former Arlington-Japan exchange program.

HBO has been showing, and will be showing for another couple weeks, an original documentary, 'White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki." One of the Hibakusha, the name given to the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, interviewed for the program, is Shigeko Sasamori. Shigeko, who was a young girl at the time of the Hiroshima bombing, and whose body vividly shows the scars of the event, was also a speaker at one of the orientation meetings.

Watching Tad's speech, or the HBO documentary, should not be done for entertainment, but for education and thought.
