AHS, Nagaokakyo students enjoy water polo.

Arlington High School students and those from Nagaokakyo, Japan, Arlington's sister city, enjoy water polo during the AHS students' recent visit. Their joy makes the front page of the city's monthly newspaper.

Arlington teens in Nagak

Hungry Arlington teenagers found happiness in a self-service sushi restaurant in Nagaokakyo, Japan. The students were among a delegation of 19 members who visited Arlington's sister city, just outside Kyoto, from June 26 to July 4.

The trip is part of a sister-city relationship that is now 23 years old. They have a photo of Gov. Michael Dukakis signing a proclamation at the start of the program. Though the trip was run by the Arlington public schools, trip members paid their own way.

A delegation from Nagaokakyo visited Arlington last April.
The Arlington delegation arrived in Japan on Tuesday evening, June 26.
The next day participants met Nagaokakyo's mayor and City Council president, and then they toured three historic shrines.
They took a break at a restaurant where sushi circulates around the tables on a conveyor belt similar to an airport luggage carousel.
On Thursday, June 28, the Arlington delegation visited Nishiotokuni High School (best read in Japanese).
Schlichtman commented: "Your Web site is starting to get a little following here in Japan.  You are helping us to demonstrate to our sister city that we take the program seriously, and I suspect we will have many Nishiotokuni High School students checking for photos."

Trip members:

Derek Burns (18),
Michael Beauvais (16),
Owen Howard (16),
Thomas Liu (17),
Justin Correll (15),
Matthew Leone (14),
Brett Whalen (15),

Katherine (Katie) Faribanks-Hayes (19),
Emily Chicojay (14),
Rachel Chasteen (13),

Lyda Langford (12).

Arlington High School teachers who are part of the delegation are:

Included are Rieko Tanaka and Paul Schlichtman, who supplied the photos and captions as well as two videos.
