Chief Fredrick Ryan announce today the addition of three police recruits to the Arlington Police Department. Town Manager Brian Sullivan authorized the appointments of Brian Fennelley, David Martin and Stephen A. Porciello Jr., which took effect June 4.

A news release from Arlington police spelled out the following:

-- Fennelley most recently worked in the banking industry as a financial crime investigator.  He is a graduate of Salem State University with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice.

-- Martin is a former financial planning/investment services sales associate. He is a graduate of Tufts University with a bachelor of arts degree in economics.

-- Porciello recently served as the assistant manager of the Forum Ice Rink of Billerica, and he will graduate this spring with a bachelor of science in criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts.

Earlier, Sullivan confirmed that Porciello is the son of Stephen A. Porciello Sr., a deputy fire chief in Arlington.

The Arlington release says the three recruits have been assigned to the Lowell Police Department Basic Recruit Training Academy, where their 22-week training experience will include concepts of community policing and creative problem solving.

The academy training will include about 50 classes in police science and other relevant subject areas, taught over the course of 880 hours.

Once they are sworn in as Arlington police officers, they will then be put through a Field Training Officer Program.

Each newly appointed officer will be partnered with a veteran Arlington police officer who will act as a mentor and role model to the new officers.

Upon completion of the F.T.O. program, the new officers will be assigned to regular duty, and after finishing one year of probation, the officers will then become permanent members of the Arlington Police Department.
