More than 400 signatures have been collected as of Feb. 5 after about 100 people participated in a vigil Dec. 8 in Brookline, Barbara Tosti reported.

A column in the Nov. 30 Advocate detailed the circumstances leading to the vigil at Bournewood Hospital in in response to the death last December of the daughter of Allan and Barbara Tosti of Arlington.

The column details issues involved in the death and responses by the hospital and the state Department of Mental Health. Tosti is the longtime chairman of the Arlington Finance Committee.

In a statement to the Arlington e-mail list Dec. 10, the Tostis wrote:

“We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the 100 people who came out on a bitterly cold night last Friday to participate in our candlelight vigil on the first anniversary of our daughter's death.

”With your help we did honor her memory and focus attention on how needless her death was and how easily it could have been prevented.

”We collected many signatures and will continue to collect signatures on our petition ….”
