Enuma Elish
performs "Metropolis" Thursday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. at the Regent
Theater. General admission Tickets: $15 advance, $18 day of show
(includes $3 facility fee).
Perhaps the most famous and influential of all silent films,
"Metropolis" had been seen only in shortened or truncated versions for
75 years until recently restored in Germany with state-of-the-art
digital technology. The film can now be seen in a form that’s as close
to the original conception of Fritz Lang as possible. Though the idea
has been executed previously by other ensembles, Enuma Elish performs a
new, all-original live soundtrack to this cinematic treasure.
Elish’s musical vision evokes a mixture of the ancient, mystical and
the futuristic that brings a new musical perspective perfectly
capturing the grand scale and mythic grandeur of the film like never
before. Virtually uncategorizable, the woodwind & percussion duo
Enuma Elish spews an exploratory jazz/rock electronica. Too structured,
and with too much of a rocking groove for jazz purists, they still
deliver extended hair-raising skronks to peel the paint off most trance
music listeners' walls. With too many terrestrially-based original
field recording samples to be "space rock," too live to be
"electronica," too high-tech for the hippy-dip… Enuma is nothing short
of its own thing, a constantly evolving sonic marvel, a nonpareil.

Travers' 1934 novel, Mary Poppins premiered in August 1964. "Practically perfect in every way," it earned 13 Academy Award nominations and became Disney's biggest box office success to date. Julie Andrews made Mary Poppins her film debut and nabbed the Oscar, beating out Audrey Hepburn for Best Actress in 1967.
