 In the campaign for Senate in the Fourth Middlesex District, Kenneth J. Donnelly has a more than 2-to-1 fund-raising edge over John Hurd, boosted by union support, some of it far from Arlington. According to campaign-finance reports through Aug. 29, Donnelly, who has represented a statewide firefighters’ organization, has raised $108,116.13 and spent $99,8818.23, leaving a balance of $3,723.39. Reports through the same date filed by Hurd, show the Arlington selectman raised $41,215 and spent $27,749.73, leaving a balance of $13,465.27.

Both have focused spending on direct-mail advertising. Donnelly has paid for consultants.
Donnelly is on track to outpace the money raised in his Senate campaign last fall. According to reports through last Dec. 31, he drew $135,841.84 and spent $132,118.45.
For the Sept. 16 primary, preliminary reports had to be filed with the state Office of Campaign & Political Finance by Sept. 8. As of that date, Sen. J. James Marzilli Jr. had not filed a report, according to the OCPF Web site. He withdrew from the race in June, but filed papers earlier, and his name will be on the ballot.
In connection with December's Senate victory, Marzilli raised $111,975 and spent $122,559.
