Written by Judy Malone Neville

Ottoson logoJudy Malone Neville, interim principal at the Ottoson Middle School, provides her e-mail update to parents and guardians, these sent Nov. 17 and 18.

The one-act play "School Daze" will be performed at OMS on Thursday, Nov. 20 and Friday, Nov. 21, both days at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $5. We hope that you will join us. The play is a well-done snap shot of middle school life.

First-term report cards were to have gone home with students on Thursday, Nov. 20.

Arlington will be celebrating a 25-year relationship with its sister city, Nagaokakyo, Japan, in 2009. Students from OMS and AHS have an opportunity to visit Nagaokakyo from July 6-July 16, 2009.

They will stay with host families and visit the city hall, schools, temples, shrines and surrounding cities of Kyoto and Osaka as representatives of the town of Arlington.  This exchange is open to students grades 7 through 11. If you are interested in learning more about his wonderful opportunity, please contact Rieko Tanaka at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or School Committee member Sue Sheffler at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

The OMS lunchtime girls' and boys' book groups will be beginning soon. The girls' book group will meet on Dec. 3 and will discuss A Step from Heaven by An Na. The OMS media center has several copies of the book. The boys' book group will meet on Dec. 17 to discuss Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. Students are asked to bring a bag lunch. Sign-up procedures will be explained in the bulletin and morning announcements.

Conferences begin on Nov. 24 (6-9 p.m.). If you have not already done so, please sign up electronically by going to the Ottoson link on the APS website.  Conferences will also be held on December 3 (12:30-2:30 p.m.), December 10 (6-8 p.m.) and December 12 (12:30-2:30 p.m.).

You may access the parent conference schedule on the school's Web site. Directions for signing up are here >>

Basketball tryouts for both girls' and boys' teams are ongoing.  The league season begins Dec. 18.

Several homerooms are assembling Thanksgiving baskets for local families. If you are interested in making a donation of non-perishable food items or a gift certificate to Stop & Shop, please stop by the office with your donation by Friday, Nov. 21.

When you receive your student's report card, please sit down with her/him to discuss her/his first term work. Report cards are only one measure of a student's development.  If you have concerns, please contact your student's subject teacher and/or guidance counselor.

Picture retake day is Thursday, Nov. 20, at 8 a.m.  Prepaid envelopes are available in the main office.
