A 50-year-old Arlington woman was injured Aug. 30 after a car lurched forward, hitting the front of Trader's Joe's in Arlington Heights and pinning her, Arlington police reported. Keum
Hwang was struck after Adrienne
Tashjian, 83, of 15 W. Chardon Road, Winchester, was attempting to park
her 2008 Cadillac, and she accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead
of the brake, police said. As a result, her vehicle lurched forward, striking Hwang at about 5:35 p.m.
Officer Steve Porciello was the first on scene, having responded
from the bike path that runs behind the store. On observing the
victim pinned behind the car, Porciello immediately directed the
dispatcher to start an ambulance to that location. Hwang was
transported to Lahey Clinic, Burlington, where the extent of her
injuries remains unknown.
Hwang's husband told police that while they were entering the store, his wife
walked back out of the store to get a
shopping carriage and was struck. "A few seconds later, he heard
a loud crash and saw a vehicle partially inside
the store," the police report says.
Because the vehicle crashed into building, the store
needed to close while the damage was repaired, but it then reopened.
The Trader Joe's
manager estimated damage at $30,000.
Firefighters at the scene determined that the building was structurally
safe.
Porciello cited Tashjian for operating to endanger, and a citation
was mailed to her home.
He also faxed an immediate threat form to the
Registry of Motor Vehicles. If the Registry deems a driver to be such a threat, the person's license can be suspended pending a hearing.
