Brion Cangiamila, a former state rep (1991-1993) and ex-selectman
(1993-1999), has officially announced his candidacy for a write-in
candidate on the Republican ballot for senator in the General Court for
the primary election Tuesday, Sept. 16.
“Beacon Hill just does not
get it,” the Billerica resident wrote in a press release. “People are struggling to
get by with the high cost of fuel, food and home-related costs.”
Cangiamila lost in the Special Election last December to Sen. J. James Marzilli Jr., Democrat of
Arlington, after longtime Sen. Robert Havern, Democrat of Arlington, resigned
to head a Boston lobbying firm.
Cangiamila, an outspoken conservative, said he jumped into the Senate race to bring choice to the people of the Fourth Middlesex District. “Without a Republican on the ballot in November, the people of the Fourth Middlesex District will be denied to opportunity to discuss the important issues facing our State,” he wrote.
Cangiamila says Beacon Hill is out of touch with the people: “They just don’t get it! People are nervous about the economy, struggling to make ends meet and feel the people they have elected to represent them just don’t seem to care.”
Democrats and Republicans acknowledge the state budget is out of balance upward of $1 billion, his press release said.
"Beacon Hill continues to spend, spend, spend and after the election will raise taxes dramatically on the taxpayers who are already hurting. After all, putting a Republican on the November ballot does nothing more at this point than give the people of the Fourth Middlesex District a choice.”
The district encompasses Arlington, Billerica, Burlington, Lexington (precincts 1,2,4,6,7) and Woburn (wards 1,3,4,5,6,7).
Cangiamila wrote that after running a successful campaign in three of the five towns in the Special Election last December, and seeing the turmoil and lack of leadership on Beacon Hill, he decided to launch a write-in campaign.
"Clearly, with rising cost of fuel at the gas pumps and to heat your home, people in the Commonwealth are stretch to the limit! Despite numerous attempts to offer tax payers a break from the gas tax and a tax credit to help heat your home, the Democratic Party on Beacon Hill have decided deny both ideas and increase spending by $1.2 billion dollars instead," he wrote in a press release.
"The taxpayers of our great state never seem to be of concern to the overwhelming one-party Legislature. Rather than dealing with the fiscal crisis we are facing, helping people deal with the realities of a recession or protecting children from child rapist with a mandatory 10-year sentence, the Democratically controlled Beacon Hill debates regulating ATVs, repealing the 1913 Marriage Law and override $125 million in special interest spending by the Governor so Santa has a train to ride in December. We deserve better!
"There are many problems which face the Commonwealth, and honest and decisive leadership is needed to address the difficult fiscal decisions which lay ahead. More government spending is not the solution nor is raising taxes. Without immediate action people of Massachusetts will be facing huge tax increases to balance the budget."
