APD logoAn Arlington police officer assigned to a construction traffic detail was attacked Aug. 6 while directing traffic on Mass. Ave., and the suspect allegedly lunged at the officer and tried to grab his gun from his holster, police said. Officer Brandon Kindle was supervising a construction site about 1:30 p.m. when a man approached the area on a bicycle, dismounted the bike and rushed toward the police officer shouting suicidal and homicidal remarks, police said.

Arrested was Albert J. Sweet, 38, of 33 Ewell Ave., Lexington. He was arraigned Aug. 7 on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and attempt to commit a crime.

According to Capt. John Serson, Sweet is being held in an unidentified psychiatric facility for 10 days.

According to a narrative from a police report on the incident, Officer Kindle was directing traffic around a work zone on the 1200 block of Mass. Ave. when the suspect dismounted his bicycle and charged at him, shouting a suicidal request.

Kindle then took defensive action to secure his service firearm, which the suspect subsequently tried to remove from it's holster.

The suspect was then subdued and pinned againt a backhoe that was being used in the construction project.

Construction workers engaged in the project for which Kindle was on detail assisted in restraining the suspect.

With the suspect restrained, Kindle requested assistance via radio, and police units from throughout Arlington responded. Officer Doug Cronin made the arrest.
