The 1990s Mitel voicemail system that the town of Arlington uses failed July 30, sending town official scrambling as communication
to town and school departments was short-circuited. Town Manager Brian
Sullivan said the system is more than 10 years old and "was
experiencing problems over the last few years. The system and
installation is expected to cost approximately $35,000.
"The system is already installed and now the voice mail announcements are being programmed," he wrote in an e-mail Aug. 5. "Some voice mail boxes will be activated today, with all of them activated within the next two days."
The repair has been made close to the time indicated in a notice posted July 31 on the town Web site. The expected time was Aug. 4 or 5.
Asked to assess the impact, Sullivan wrote, "I would characterize [this] as an inconvenience. This is the time of the year with the lowest volume of calls. People can still leave messages with call takers during office hours. After hours, they can use the online request center and email."
The town Web site says: "Phone lines are not affected and are fully operational. However, the informational message on the main library number (781-316-3200) is not in service and the library has offered the phone numbers below to help connect residents more directly to the information they seek.
"If you need to leave a message, you can call the Town's main switchboard, send an email, or send a Question or Request via the Request/Answer Center."
The phone system for Arlington town and schools is managed by the comptroller's office.
