As rock music blared an estimated 70 people gathered in front of Town Hall Friday as town officials honored the Arlington Youth Baseball & Softball Association 12-year-old all-stars, ready to represent New England this month at the Cal Ripken Majors/60 World Series in Martin, Tenn. To get the team there, Lori Talanian announced major donations, including $5,000 from Herb Chambers, the car dealer. Team members sporting T-shirts proclaiming their regional championship cheered from the back of a truck as police cars and fire equipment led a rolling rally at 4:30 p.m. from Arlington High School to Town Hall, where a banner spanned Mass. Ave.

The team's manager, Neal Coiley, told the audience that his team went 12-1, rebounding from
a tough loss to South Weymouth to beat that team twice. Town Manager
Brian Sullivan introduced three selectmen -- Clarissa Rowe, Jack Hurd
and Diane Mahon. Annie LaCourt joined them a bit later. Kevin Greeley was not present. "This [playing
in a Series] is something you'll remember for a long time," Sullivan said.

Talanian announced the gift from Chambers, whose name was on the banner
of the rally truck, as well as others, including $1,000 from Cambridge
Savings Bank. The Arlington Police Patrolmen's Association donated
$1,500. A complete list is expected.
It is believed the estimated $12,000 needed for the trip was in hand
not long after an appeal went out July 27 from Paul Carroll, league
president; and Lori Ribeiro, fundraising committee chair; and Coiley.
Even so, gift remain welcome. Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation can contribute online via aybsaonline.org or
mail a check made out to AYBSA to: All-Stars Fundraiser, Arlington
Youth Baseball and Softball Assn., Box 246 Arlington, Mass. 02474.
Team members were presented with purple travel bags. Town official received purple T-shirts and hats.
Following the ceremony, a cookout was held at the Knights of Columbus.
People left, allowing rush-hour traffic to flow again, as Journey's
"Don't Stop Believing" blasted over Mass. Ave.
