Ann Reilly reported July 26 on the latest game:
"The score was 1-1 when we arrived; Harrison Roberson had hit a homerun.
"It remained tied until the bottom of the third inning when Arlington scored five runs, three of the runs coming on a homerun by Seth Coiley. Score 6-1.
"In the top of the fourth Nashua scored 4 runs on a grand slam home run. Score 6-5.
"In the bottom of the fourth Jared Glaser hit a two run homerun for the final score of 8-5.
"Danny Kelly struck out the last batter with a man on first to end the game. Tim Conroy also pitched for Arlington."
After beating West Nashua, N.H., 6-4 on July 22 in Kingston, the scheduled July 24 game was postponed until the next day. Ann Reilly, wife of a league vice president, provided these details:
"Arlington won again 6-4," she wrote in an e-mail July 22. "They were
winning 6-1 going into the 6th inning, and Nashua hit a 3-run homerun
to make it 6-4, but Arlington shut them down in the last inning.
The team was to play Thursday night, but it was postponed because of rain.
Reilly wrote July 24, "Arlington will be playing W. Nashua, N.H., tomorrow at 5
in Kingston. If they lose, they play Nashua again same night (I'm not sure of the time). If they win, it's on to Tennessee."
Reilly had written July 22 that Nashua was to play a team Brookfield, Conn., July 23, and the winner of that game would play Arlington.
"They need to beat Arlington twice to knock Arlington out. If Arlington wins just one more game, they move on to Tennessee for the Cal Ripken Little League World Series.
"Not bad for the first year in the Cal Ripken League."
On July 24, she wrote:
"Nashua and CT started their game [Wednesday] night but did not finish it because of rain. They continued their game tonight and the winner was suppose to play Arlington tonight, but again because of the rain, they never got to start the game."
The Arlington 12-year-olds took two wins last weekend. On July 21, Dan Kelly provided the following summary of how they reached this point:
The 2008 12-year-old American League all-stars are the Cal Ripken 2008
EMass champs. Their journey started in Winchester when they captured
the Division 1 title by beating the Arlington Nationals, Burlington and
Winchester to advance to the EMass state tournament.
At the EMass games in Tyngsboro, the team started strong, beating Marshfield and Dracut, before Weymouth South handed the team its first loss. Arlington bounced back the next game against Mashpee.
Now the squad had to face Weymouth South again. This would be the first of two games as Arlington beat Weymouth South, 12-4, behind the pitching of Remy Pontes and the two homeruns by Danny Kelly. Arlington played Weymouth South again, winner-take-all for the EMass state title.
With Danny Colombo pitching the first two inings and Danny Kelly the last four, and with timely hitting by Pat Harrington, Harrison Roberson and Seth Coiley, Arlington beat Weymouth South again to ecome the EMass champions.
The Arlington all-stars advanced to the New England Regionals in Kingston. Arlington's first opponent was Berwick, Maine, on July 19. In the third inning, Danny Colombo started what would a five-run outburst with a homerun, as Arlington won, 6-3.
Game two, the next day, was a pitching duel, as Kingston and Arlington hurlers combined for a total of 10 strikeouts.
The only run of the game came in the fifth inning when Harrison Roberson doubled to right center and advanced to third base on a overthrow. Seth coiley grounded to second to score Roberson for what turned out to be a 1-0 victory.
According to Coach Neil Coiley, every team member was an intergral part in the team's success.
