Following a lengthy police foot chase, Arlington police July 2 captured a man suspected in numerous break-ins in town. Bennet Mesgoun, 22, of 35 Fremont Court, was to be arraigned in Cambridge District Court on charges of breaking and entering with
intent to commit a felony, larceny over $250, malicious destruction of
property and resisting arrest.
Police provided the following account:
About
10:35 a.m. July 2, a Medford woman reported witnessing a young man breaking into and
entering a motor vehicle near Massachusetts Avenue and
Amsden Street. Police responded immediately and gave chase
to the suspect who had fled the area after spotting police cars.
Several Arlington officers who were on duty as well as police detail
officers responded to the area and set up a several block perimeter.
After about an hour, police flushed out the suspect in the Waldo Road
area after an alert resident called 911.
The suspect again fled the
area on foot, and officers were able to subdue the suspect after he
scaled a fence and ran into the St. Paul’s Cemetery, where Inspector Michael Sheehan had been waiting.
Two officers suffered
minor injuries during he chase. The names were unavilable.
The property stolen from the vehicle -- a laptop computer and GPS System --
was recovered in a nearby yard and returned to the owner.
Before his arraignment, the suspect was held overnight at Arlington
police headquarters.
Mesgoun is known to Arlington police.
