Michael Whalen, the suspect in the Amber Alert case in April, changed his
plea to guilty June 30. Appearing before Steven E. Thomas in Cambridge
Distrct Court, the Arlington man pleaded guilty to charges of parental
kidnapping and making threats, Arlington police said. Whalen received a one-year sentence for the kidnapping charge, and received a six-month sentence on the charge of making threats, to run concurrent with count one at the House of Correction, police said.

The commonwealth dropped the third count, receiving stolen property, on May 23.
Whalen had said he would kill his 6-month-old son, shoot five people
and then commit suicide, a prosecutor said in court May 1, according to
The Boston Globe. At the time, Whalen pleaded not guilty in Cambridge District Court to charges that included parental kidnapping.
The Arlington Police Department reported April 30 that the Amber Alert
for 6-month-old Lucas Whalen of Arlington was canceled at about 7:30.
The baby was brought to the Arlington police station and appeared to be
in good health. Chief Fred Ryan announced the news at Town Meeting
about 8:05 p.m.
